Union Housing and Poverty Alleviation Minister Ajay Maken today approved the revised income criteria for housing of urban poor, including the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and Low Income Group (LIG).

Making the announcement at HUDCO Pavilion in the IITF 2012, he said the urban poor having an annual household income of up to Rs one lakh will be classified as EWS and those falling between Rs one lakh and two lakh would be categorised as LIG.

The housing needs of urban poor continue to be pressing and an estimated 18.78 million people were falling short of house at the beginning of the 12th Five Year Plan, the Minister informed.

"Affordable housing for all is a key policy agenda of the government," he added.
