Ruling AIADMK's Sivaganga District Student's Wing Secretary M G Kathiresan, his son and car driver were hacked to death by an unidentified group at Sengulam village here last night, triggering tension.
Police said the attack took place when the 42-year-old Kathiresan, along with his son K Prasanna, 14 and daughter K Nikila, 11, were returning in a car to Sivaganga after visiting their village Periya Kannanur. While passing Sengulam village, the assailants intercepted the car and attacked them with sickles killing Kathiresan, Prasanna and Bhoominathan, 32, driver of the car. Nikila was admitted to a private hospital in Madurai with multiple injuries.
Meanwhile, tension gripped Sivaganga town following the triple murder. Public transport was stopped while all the shops and commercial establishments downed their shutters.
Enraged over the murder, a large number of AIADMK men resorted to 'road roko' near Aranmanai Vasal demanding arrest of the assailants.
Police suspect enemity related to the recent Civic polls may be the reason behind the brutal murders. Special teams have been formed to trace and arrest the culprits. Police personnel were deployed in all the vulnerable areas to prevent any untoward incidents.
