Security has been beefed up all over Maharashtra, including Mumbai, in view of the deteriorating health condition of Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray.

The city police has cancelled all leave and 48,000 policemen will be on the streets working in shifts. The Rapid Action Force has been deployed to help maintain law and order.

Hundreds of Shiv Sena workers gathered late last evening outside Thackeray's residence on hearing about his condition, Areas like Kalanagar, where Matoshree is located, Dadar, Shivaji Park, Parel, Lal Baug, Currey Road and Chinchpokhli were under heavy security blanket. Ten platoons of the State Reserve police force were stationed at Kalanagar, Meanwhile, President Pranab Mukherjee, who was to begin a two-day visit to Mumbai today, has cancelled his trip.

Sources said this was on account of Mr Thackeray's uncertain health condition.

BJP president Nitin Gadkari is expected to fly down to Mumbai from Nagpur this afternoon to visit Mr Thackeray.

A team of doctors stationed inside the house with nursing staff has been taking care of the Sena patriarch, who has been having breathing problems.
