TPCC demands legal action against CPM MLA for abusing police
The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) has demanded legal action against CPM MLA Shankar Prasad Datta, who allegedly pressurised police to release two persons accused of firing and threatening police, early this week.
Mr Datta reportedly had abused the officer in-charge of East Agartala police station and also forcibly taken away the two accused who were party members and his close associates.
The accused were detained on the basis of details provided b by the main accused in a firing incident at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) area. They were reportedly involved in illegal activities as well as extortion of money.
'A video footage clearly indicated that Mr Datta abused the police officer in the police station itself and took away two accused forcibly,' Congress spokesperson Ratan Chakraborty said.
He sought registering of a case against Mr Datta. TPCC had already taken the matter to DGP for legal directives.
He alleged that CPM leaders had been patronizing criminals in the city and held Chief Minister Manik Sarkar responsible for the lawlessness.
Meanwhile, Mr Datta, in a press communique, trashed the allegations against him as 'baseless'. 'There is no truth in all these. There are some vested interests behind this to tarnish my image,' he added.
