Maharashtra Finance Min asks farmers leader Shetty to withdraw agitation
Maharashtra Finance Minister Jayant Patil today advised farmers leader and the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghtana (SSS) chief Raju Shetty not to misguide farmers on the remunerative price for sugarcane and asked him to end the ongoing agitation.
Speaking at a foundation laying function of Sar Senapati Santaji Ghorpade Sugar Factory at Belewadi-Kallamma in Ajara tehsil of the district this afternoon, he said state government always gave priority to cooperative movement in the state. The sugarcane farmers are owners of sugar factories.
Mr Patil alleged that some people were trying to create a rift between farmers and government. He said that the sugarcane price is linked to exports of sugar.
'If basic rice is increased, then the rate of sugarcane per tonne will also increase and factory owners would be able to give good rates,' he said.
He advised Mr Shetty to tell truth behind all this to the farmers and said that it was not proper to agitate on this issue.
He even extended all cooperation to Mr Shetty in this regard.
The minister and NCP leader blamed the media for wrongly reporting the recent statement of Union Agriculture Minister and NCP chief Sharad Pawar.
Mr Pawar had reportedly stated that 'Mr Shetty is not agitating against the sugar mills run by his community leaders in Kolhapur and Ichalkaranji, he only wanted to stop other sugar factories in the state.' Hassan Mushrif, labour minister and founder of the sugar factory, presided over the function. He also spoke on the occasion.
