Five maoists were gunned down, one arrested and two security personnel sustained minor injuries during a brief exchange of fire between the Left Wing extremists and the joint force at Baliaguda under Govindpur Panchayat near Mohana on the Ganjam- Gajapati district border in Odisha today Odisha Director General of Police Prakash Mishra, who confirmed the killing of the five maoists in the encounter told newspersons here two pistols, some ammunition, empty catridges and explosive materials were seized from the encounter spot.
Mr Mishra said all the five maoists killed in the exchange of fire were in the top maoist leader Sabya Sachi Panda'a group and belonged to Raikia, G Udaygiri and Baliguda areas of Kandhamal district.
The DGP said acting on a specific information that around 20 Maoists were holding a camp the Special Operation Group(SOG) and the District Voluntary Force(DVF)moved to the area at about 1040 hours.
He said the Left Wing extremists first fired upon the police team after the sentry posted by the Maoists alerted them. The Police team retaliated and in in a brief exchange of fire five Maoists were killed.
While one Maoist was arrested some others including Odisha CPI(Maoist) Party leader Sabyasachi Panda managed to escape.
Mr Mishra said the exchange of fire continued for 10 to 15 minutes. Later, the Police team scanned the entire area and seized the arms and ammuntions. Combing operation was still on to nab the extremists hiding in the nearby forest.
