A 50-year-old woman has immolated herself over an alleged dispute with her husband in Dokriya village, police said today, in a region which has been beset by peasants unrest over land acquisition by the Madhya Pradesh government for setting up a power plant by a private company.

Sunia Bai, who was suffering from disease for some time, returned to her husband Chhakka Gari's house yesterday and had a quarrel with him.

She set herself ablaze last night and sustained severe burns.

She succumbed to her injuries on way to hospital.

However, leaders of some political parties attributed the woman's suicide to acquisition of farmers' irrigated land by the Madhya Pradesh government for setting up a power plant by a private company.

Significantly, farmers in the area are agitating over the land acquisition and Janata Dal (United) President Sharad Yadav also came here on November 9 to support the agitation.

Some peasants are still observing sit-in, the sources said.
