At least five leftwing extremists were killed and two Special Operation Group(SOG) jawans injured today during an encounter between the Maoists and the joint force comprising the SOG and the District Voluntary Force(DVF) at Bhaliaguda under Govindpur Panchayat in Ganjam district, police said.

Ganjam Superintendent of Police Ashish Singh confirmed that five rebels were killed in the encounter and the police had recovered their bodies from the spot.

He said the joint force also recovered arms and ammunition and several Maoist literature from the spot.

The SP said the force engaged in the combing operation this morning was attacked by the ultras. The former retaliated, killing five of them on the spot, he said.

The SP said top Maoist leader Sabya Sachi Panda was leading the group but he managed to escape. However, the police suspect that he might have been injured in the attack.

Soon after, the forces were mobilised from both Gajapati and Ganjam districts and an intensive combing operation was launched in the area.

Singh said a detailed report of any more casualty on the Maoist side would be known only after the SOG team returned to the base camp.

He said the force had found bloodstains at the encounter spot and launched a search operation in the area to find out whether some more naxalites were killed or injured in the encounter.
