A criminal was beaten to death by an angry mob in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut district late Tuesday when he tried to flee the crime scene after shooting a garment businessman, police said Wednesday.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Meerut K. Satyanarayan told IANS that armed assailants barged into the house of garment businessman Akshat Jain in Budhbaba locality Tuesday midnight with an intent to loot.
Jain was shot dead by the assailants when he offered them stiff resistance after his family was held hostage.
On hearing the gun shot, neighbours rushed to the Jains' house from where the robbers tried to flee. While others managed to escape, one criminal was overpowered by the residents and beaten to death.
Identified as Nisar of Sardhana area, the criminal was declared dead by doctors when he was taken to a medical facility.
Police have since launched a manhunt to nab the culprits but none has been arrested so far.
