The united forum of local panches and sarpanches Wednesday said they would field candidates for the four state legislative council seats to be chosen by the Panchayat (village council) representatives.

In a statement here Wednesday, the Jammu and Kashmir Panch and Sarpanch united forum said: "We have decided to participate in the legislative council elections. We will field candidate for all the four seats."

The candidates elected from among the village representatives shall work for empowerment of the Panchayats, the statement said.

The forum also accused the political parties in the state of taking "an anti-Panchayat stand as none of the candidates in the panel of the political parties is either a panch or a sarpanch".

The ruling coalition partners in Jammu and Kashmir, the Congress and the regional National Conference, had announced they would jointly contest the forthcoming legislative council elections.

Elections for four legislative council seats to be elected by village representatives are being held here next month.
