Assam defeat hosts Jharkhand by 53 runs
Assam today bundled out hosts Jharkhand for 159 in their second innings with the magical bowling spells of its spin duo 'first innings hero' Arien Konwar (4/72) and Jamaluddin S Mohammed (5/52) and won the all important group C Ranji encounter played at badly turning pitch of Keenan stadium here by a margin of 53 runs.
Assam, which had trounced Tripura by 10 wickets in its last encounter, got 6 more points for the second consecutive win today. The spinners claimed a total of 33 wickets in the match.
Jharkhand started with overnight score of 56 for 2, still 157 short of the victory target of 213, but got an early jolt in the form of 'inform' opener Rameez Nemat (42). He was caught by Zhimomi on the bowling of Mohammed. Star middle order southpaw Saurabh Tiwary also got out for a paltry 27. Tiwary was clean bowled by Mohammed, who took two more successive wickets (D Chougule lbw 28 and wk S P Gautam c and b 30) to end all hopes of the hosts.
After this Konwar, who had taken 6 wickets in the first innings, struck the last nail in the coffin by bowling out the remaining four tail-enders cheaply (Nadeem st Das 12, S Gupta lbw 2, SS Rao c A Sinha 4 and Jaskaran Singh lbw 0).
Samar Quadari remained not out on zero.
