With demand for Indian honey increasing in Europe, the production of Honey in Haryana is fast gaining ground as the state expects a production of 2500 tonnes of honey during this year as against 2000 tonnes produced in last year.
Stating this here today, a Haryana Agriculture Department spokesman said that the business in honey was showing an increase of 15 per cent every year in the state.
"India accounts for annual export of about 55,000 tonnes of honey. With the profession of beekeeping getting congenial atmosphere, the unemployed youth are finding ample opportunities in the field of production of honey in the state," he added.
He said with the flowering of early variety of mustard and eucalyptus in Jind, Bhiwani, Narnaul, Rewari and Jhajjar districts by the end of November, those engaged in beekeeping were installing their boxes for production of honey.
He said "the state government is taking effective steps to promote this profession and the state horticulture department has been imparting training in beekeeping free of cost from time to time to the unemployed youth. It also helps them in getting loan from banks to set up their own ventures".
