E-9 nations to shift focus to quality in education

Noting that they had made some satisfactory progress in universalising primary education, the nine post populous countries of the world, including India and China, today decided to shift their focus to bring quality and relevance to education, resolving to divert more funds towards this objective.

These countries today adopted an Action Plan at the end of their two-day Ministerial Review Meeting to address the challenges on various fronts--learning and teaching process, reinforcing institutional capacity, adopting ICT tools to impart education, making curriculum socially relevant and strenghthening monitoring and evaluation etc.

They came out with an outcome document titled 'New Delhi Commitment', which said the expansion of access to basic education had not been accompanied by commensurate progress in providing quality education and effective learning opportunities.

"Quality Education and effective learning are at the heart of the 'Education for All' agenda. We resolve to endure that all learners in our countries have the right to quality education.We therefore strive for increased allocation of financial resources to this end," the document said.

The E-9 Initiative as it is called was launched in 1993 in New Delhi at the 'Education For All' Summit of the Nine High-Population Countries.

The 'E' stands for education and the '9' represents the nine highly populated countries: Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria and Pakistan.

Briefing mediapersons about the outcome of today's meeting, Minister for Human Resource Development Pallam Raju and his Deputy Shashi Tharoor said enrollment in schools had considerably increased in these countries in the last two decades since the E-9 initiative was launched in 1993.

Dr Raju said the impact of the expansion of education especially as regards decreasing the gender gap could be seen in the form of decrease of population in states like UP and Bihar, as there was direct correlation between decrease in population and increase in female education.

Dr Tharoor said India had achieved great success in increasing enrolment in schools and work in curriculum development had been highly appreciated by the member countries.
