Local girl Vasanti Shinde finished on a high by completing a double crown at the Walchand Cup Under-16 National Series junior tennis tournament organised and hosted by Deccan Gymkhana, on Saturday.
Punjab's seventh seed Dalwinder Singh clinched the boy's singles title, thus denying Tamil Nadu's Vasudev Vijayaraman a double crown.
For sixth seed Vasanti, it was an all well-known affair against third seed Devanshi Bhimjiyani, with whom she trains at the PYC Hindu Gymkhana under coach Hemant Bendre.
Vasanti broke her opponent twice in the first set, but failed to consolidate the break on both occasions. So, from the fourth game to the seventh, it was all about service breaks, for both the players. Vasanti held her nerve in the tie-breaker though, losing just two points, to take a one-set lead.
In the second set Vasanti, a left-hander, started well with a break in the first game. She repeated that in the third and raced to a 4-0 lead.
Devanshi managed to hold a couple of service games after that but in the end, Vasanti was too clinical in winning the set 6-2, and with that the match that lasted for an hour and 45 minutes.
Vasanti had won the girls doubles title on Friday. This is the first double crown in year 2012 for Vasanti, a Std 10 student, studying external.
This was the fourth meeting in a final for Vasanti and Devanshi, and the left-hander has won all four occasions.
