Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today handed over a cash award of Rs one lakh each to five fishermen for their act of bravery when they rescued the crew members of the Mumbai-based Oil Tanker vessel, 'Prathiba Cauvery', that ran aground during Cyclone Nilam on October 31.
The fishermen -- Vadivelu, Udhayamurthy, Kalaimani, Gopi and Madhan -- met the Chief Minister at the State Secretariat.
Ms Jayalalithaa honoured them with cash awards and the fishermen thanked her for recognising their selfless work, an official statement said.
When cyclone Nilam ravaged the coast of Chennai, the five fishermen, braving gusty winds and risking their own lives, entered the sea and saved the sailors from drowning.
The sailors took the life boat and tried to reach the shore but it capsized.
Five of the 22 sailors, who took the life boat, were drowned and their bodies were washed ashore two days later.
One of the sailors was declared brought dead at the hospital.
