Pak govt. has devised strategy to stop drone strikes, claims Defence Minister
The government of Pakistan has devised a strategy to stop drone strikes by America, which is considered counterproductive in combating terrorism, Defence Minister Naveed Qamar has said.
"Government of Pakistan and leadership of armed forces have repeatedly raised the drone issue and need for their immediate cessation with the US and its military authorities," the Daily Times quoted Qamar, as saying.
Qamar said that continuation of drone strikes in Pakistan have led to negative public opinion. He however, could not provide the exact timeframe regarding the termination of the strikes, because of absence of any agreement in this regard.
Time and again, Pakistan has urged the U.S. to cease drone strikes in its territory, arguing that they are counterproductive in combating terrorism. The U.S., however, maintains that drone attacks are essential to wipe out Al-Qaeda and Haqqani network militants, believed to be taking shelter in the tribal area of North Waziristan.
