Sonia, Rahul take bus to Congress meet
With price rise and scams roiling the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), the first family of the Congress sent a message of austerity to the party workers and people on Friday by taking a bus, the mode of transportation of the aam aadmi, to Surajkund, the venue of the Congress brain storming session in Haryana.
While Prime Minister Manmohan Singh went to the venue on his own, the Gandhis and other senior Congress leaders travelled in buses, reports said.
All the leaders met at 24, Akbar Road, the Congress headquarters, on Friday morning and left for the meeting venue in bus. Seventy delegates are attending the meeting.
The message apparently was to bond with the common people and not show off large convoys of cars with red beacons and sirens.
The Congress leadership is meeting at Surajkund Friday to chalk out the future path of the criticism-hit party.
Reports said the current political scenario, economic issues and implementation of the party's manifesto would be discussed at the meet.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi will begin the proceedings with her opening remarks and a debate on the political situation will follow. Then, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will start a discussion on the state of the country's economy. Thereafter, finance minister P Chidambaram will start a debate on the economic situation.
