U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan Richard Olson has said he hopes to see a democratic transition in the country, and termed the general elections to be held next year, as an important milestone in Pakistan's history.

Olson said he has come to Pakistan with an agenda of improvement in bilateral relations, and added that the two countries have had strong relations despite the ups and downs over the years, reports The News.

He said he wished to meet as many Pakistanis as possible during his stay so as to better understand the people and improve the people to people contacts.

Olson also acknowledged Pakistan's key role in the war against terror and said it has paid a very high price. He said Pakistan also has an important role to play in Afghanistan and appreciated Pakistan's efforts in this regard.

"We are looking forward for constructive cooperation between the two countries in the war on terror," he said.
