Party bigger than PM post: Advani
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) patriarch L K Advani on Thursday turned 85 and while embattled party president Nitin Gadkari was one of the early visitors to his residence for wishing him, the senior leader himself said the party is much bigger than the post of Prime Minister.
Advani, who was once the frontrunner as BJP's prime ministerial candidate, said the party has given him a lot. "A lot of people say I aspire to be PM. Tell me, is it bigger than the party?" he said.
The visit of Gadkari also assumes significance since the party's president is facing a slew of corrupt business practices charges with his Purti group's activities and share holding.
An open revolt demanding his removal by leaders like Ram Jethmalani and his son Mahesh Jethmalani has compounded the situation.
Gadkari's term as party president ends in December and it was almost certain earlier that he would get a second term.
Advani, who reportedly is opposed to Gadkari getting a second term, had earlier skipped the meeting of the BJP's top leadership this week where Gadkari got some support despite the corruption charges and revolt by the Jethmalanis.
Gadkari met Advani for about 20 minutes, reports said.
