Kolkata, Mar 22 : Three Kolkata students have made it among the top five national rank holders, according to just published results of GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) 2010.
As has been the trend in the past few years, Kolkata students have garnered most of the top ranks - 3 in the top 5, 3- in the top 20 and more than 30 in the top 100. The top rankers from Kolkata, doing the city proud are: Abhishek Sinha (AIR 2, ECE), Shubhankar Roy Chowdhury (AIR 2, Civil Engg) and Sayan Ghosh (AIR 5, ECE), Shubhadip Mukherjee (AIR 13, EE), Santanu Talukdar (AIR 17, IN) and Subhadeep Gupta (AIR 18, CS).
The rankings also mean that students will be able to select institutes of their choice from across India and have great job prospects as well.
"The results are great because we do get some really good students from Kolkata. The city has taken to GATE in a big way, with the cream of the engineering grads opting for it these days, and we are happy that we have played our role in bringing about this change," said Abhijit Chaudhuri, Head-Gateforum Educational Services Pvt. Ltd.
The GATE 2010 exams have been even more competetive, owing to the fact that it has seen a drastic increase in the number of test takers this year, being more than 4 lakh students, with those opting for ECE and CS each, accounting for over a lakh.
Chaudhuri said there have been a few significant changes in the results process this year.
"There is no 'not qualified' category this year, instead there is a cutoff marks for AICTE stipend eligibility. For e.g. in CS, those with more than 25 marks (general category), 22.5 marks (OBC category) and 16.67 marks (SC/ST category) would be eligible for the AICTE stipend. Also, more than 20 people have got a score of 1000 in ECE and CS, which may not cause a problem this year, as last year's GATE score was valid only for one year, but may lead to confusion next year," he said.
Gateforum founded by alumni of IIT Kharagpur, IIM Calcutta, IIM Lucknow and XLRI Jamshedpur, provides classroom coaching to aspirants of GATE across a number of cities in India.
