India to set up National Green Tribunal: Jairam Ramesh

Mumbai, Mar 14 : Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh has said that the Central Government has mooted a National Green Tribunal for speedy and efficient disposal of cases related to environmental issues.

Ramesh said that the tribunal would act as a check on industrial pollution and aggrieved persons would be able to approach the tribunal to claim civil damages for non-implementation of environmental laws.

"We will have National Green Tribunal where any aggrieved citizen of India can go and claim civil damages for non-implementation of (environmental) laws. That would act as a serious check on industry and the people who are responsible for meeting these regulations," said Ramesh.
The National Green Tribunal Bill 2009 will be tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Monday (March 15).

The Central Government had cleared the bill in December 2009.
