China's lack of positive response disappointing: Dalai Lama

Dharamsala, Mar 10: The Dalai Lama on Wednesday expressed disappointment over China's 'lack of positive response' to the Tibetan people's aspiration for a 'middle-way' solution the Tibet issue.

"As a free spokesperson of the Tibetan people I have repeatedly spelled out their fundamental aspirations to the leaders of the People's Republic of China (PRC). Their lack of a positive response is disappointing," media reports quoted the leader of having said in a statement.

The statement was issued marking the 51st anniversary of a failed uprising against the Chinese rule.

"Whether the Chinese government acknowledges it or not, there is a serious problem in Tibet...For more than 30 years, I have tried my
best to enter into talks with the PRC to resolve the issue of Tibet through the middle-way approach that is of benefit to us both," the Dalai Lama was quoted as saying.

He affirmed that the aspirations of the Tibetan people are in accordance with the constitution of the PRC and the law on national regional autonomy, but rued the fact that no concrete result has emerged so far.

Reiterating the Tibetans commitment for a dialogue to resolve the issue, the Dalai Lama said there was little hope that results will be achieved with the present attitude of the Chinese government.

The Dalai Lama's representative had held several rounds of talks with Chinese government delegates, but no breakthrough has been achieved yet.

The leader had advocated for greater autonomy for Tibet, rather than complete independence as the 'middle-way' for resolving the conflict.

He had fled Tibet in 1959 and established his government-in-exile near here, though it is not recognised by any country. Around 140,000 Tibetans now live in exile, most of them in India.
