Former South African cricketer Kristen who takes over as the new India coach from March 1 has emphasized that he would prefer that Test cricket is India's top priority.

Soon after meeting the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials and India Test skipper Anil Kumble here on Tuesday, Kristen told newsmen that the countrys recent performance in Test cricket has had a great impact and that needs to be enhanced.

Forty-year-old Kristen will be India coach on a two-year contract and will succeed the controversial Australian coach Greg Chappel in the job. According to Kristen, Indias schedule shows that the team will play 15 Test matches during the next year and he hoped that India will develop into the best Test side under his guidance.

Currently, India are second in the ICC test rankings behind Australia

When asked to comment on the recent Twenty-20 version of cricket as well as the ensuing Indian Premier League, Kristen opined that the new variation of the game has generated huge interest and there is a lot of money involved and the players are getting remunerated much better than they were in the 90s.

It may be mentioned here that Kirsten has already spent a few weeks with Team India during the recent Test series in Australia that India lost 2-1 in a four-match series. Kristens first independent challenge as India coach comes against his homeland when South Africa tour India for three Tests starting next month.
