'India's auto sector to contribute over 10pc of GDP'

Of the estimated 25 million new employees and based on the current pattern of employment, it is projected that the Indian automobile sector will need about 7 million people (or 28pc of total manpower requirement) for managerial/general work.

Skilled workers will contribute to 15.5 million (or 62pc of the requirement), while unskilled workers will number about 2.5 million, said the report.

According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the Indian automobile sector is witnessing shift in demographics and customer loyalties, a buoyant and competitive domestic market and newer alliances and acquisitions.

Alongside, increasing liberalisation and environmental changes are creating opportunities for companies to reinvent themselves in form and spirit.


Keeping this in mind, SIAM is organizing 'Accelerating Growth through People' - the first ever conclave on Human Resource issues concerning the automobile industry-here on Friday (Feb 12).

The HR Conclave is being held to address the wider ramifications of the exciting and exacting times that the Indian automobile industry is experiencing in the present times.

The conclave will involve eminent business leaders, namely Anand Mahindra, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Mahindra and Mahindra; R.C. Bhargava, Chairman, Maruti Suzuki; Karl Slym, President and Managing Director, General Motors India; Pawan Goenka, President (Automotive sector) Mahindra and Mahindra and President-SIAM, Ravi Pisharody, President-CVBU, Tata Motors; and Raman Kumar Sharma, Vice President and Director, Honda SIEL Cars.

Talking about the initiative, Dilip Chenoy, Director General, SIAM, said, "The first SIAM HR Conclave will provide a forum to learn from best practices and perspectives shared by automobile industry leaders."

The HR Conclave is expected to be attended by over 250 industry professionals. These include line and HR managers of the Automobile OEMs and Auto components industry, as well as from the automobile dealer community.
