Senior Superintendent of Traffic (National Highway) Alok Kumar said: "The highway was closed following landslides and shooting stones at Panthal near Ramban on the highway.
"The road clearance process is on and if the weather improves, we should be able to re-open the highway shortly".
He said that all the stranded vehicles, mostly load carriers numbering 350 and some passenger vehicles, were at safe places between Udhampur and Ramban towns and the administration had made adequate arrangements for food and other necessities for the stranded passengers.
Reports reaching here from winter capital Jammu said hundreds of Srinagar-bound passengers were facing problems as they had run out of cash and could not pay for their food and lodging.
"I have no money either to pay for a hotel room or for any food. I reached here four days back to return home after finishing my work in Uttar Pradesh. I don't know what to do now," Ali Muhammad, 49, a local contractor told IANS on phone from Jammu.
