The Shiv Sainiks reportedly attacked Mehul Theatre in Mulund (West) and Shreyas Threatre at Ghatkopar that will be screening the film.
The activists demonstrated in front of the two cinema halls, shouted slogans, broke glasses of the booking windows and tore posters of the film.
There were also reports of similar protests from other parts of the city, including Kanjurmarg, Bandra and Khar.
According to media reports, at least 12 Sena actrivists were detained from Mulund, while another 24 were detained from Ghatkopar and Kanjurmarg for the protests.
On Tuesday, Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar met the Mumbai police chief and obtained assurances of security during the screening and release of MNIK, facing the ire of Shiv Senas for actor Shah Rukh Khan's stance on Pakistani players.
"We have been assured full protection by the police," said Karan Johar after meeting the Mumbai police commissioner D Sivanandan.
Earlier, the police chief had assured of security during the film's scheduled release on Feb 12 and during its screening subsequently.
Things reached a flashpoint when Shah Rukh Khan said he would not apologise to the Shiv Senas for his remark on Pakistani players.
SRK said he stood by what he said (on welcoming Pakistani players in the Indian Premier League).
Meanwhile, security measures for Shah Rukh Khan have also been stepped up.
