The Media Centre for National Security of the Ministry of Defence, Public Security, Law and Order reported that General Sarath Fonseka was taken into military custody around 9.00 pm on Feb 8 in connection with certain fraudulent acts and other military offences committed by him.
It said further that Military investigations are in progress and a detailed statement will be issued later, according to the official news portal of Sri Lanka.
Fonseka lost last month's presidential elections in Sri Lanka and later rejected the election results. He said there is an attempt to assassinate him.
UPFA candidate Mahinda Rajapaksa was re-elected as Sri Lanka President for a second consecutive term with a landslide victory over his rival retired military General Sarath Fonseka.
"The government violated election laws, manipulated and misled people," Fonseka said and alleged that there were attempts to assassinate him.
