Special Judge Darshan Singh framed charges under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Surjit Singh Grewal, who is posted as superintendent of police (detective) in a border district of Punjab, and former sub-inspector Amarjit Singh.
According to police, a case was registered against Grewal and Singh for abducting two youth, in their early 20s, from neighbouring Mohali town in 1989. At that time, Grewal was posted as inspector while Singh was posted as assistant sub-inspector in Punjab Police.
The youth were killed in a "shoot-out" and their family members later approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which ordered a CBI probe.
"We have collected evidence that points towards direct involvement of Grewal and Singh in the murder of two youths in 1989. We will submit all the facts and figures in the court during the next hearing," said the CBI counsel.
The next hearing is slated Feb 15.
