The first day of February has been a witness to many events that has changed the course of history. There have been many important battles, births and deaths of important people and other events, which have taken place on this day.

In the year 772, on this day, Adrian I began his reign as the Catholic Pope. On February 1, 1327, the teenaged Edward III was crowned as the new King of England. But he was unable to rule the country. The powers rested in the hands of the mother of King Edward, Queen Isabella and her lover Roger Mortimer. In the year 1587, Queen Elizabeth I finally signed on the death sentence of Mary Stuarts on this very day.

Sweden and Prussia have been traditional enemies. But in the year 1720, both the countries decided to put an end to the violence and on February 1, they signed the peace treaty. Exactly after 70 years, in the year 1790, the Supreme Court was convened for the first time in New York. The 2nd German and Danish war had also begun in this day, in the year 1864.

The year 1884 is very significant for those who are students or associated with the field of literature. On February 1, 1884 the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary was published. Thomas Alva Edison completed the construction of the first movie studio in West Orange, New Jersey on this day, in 1893.

The first film censor board was created in Pennsylvania in the year 1914. The day was again the first day of February and thus began the concept of censorship in films. On February 1, 1920, the first armored commercial car was launched. This was a result of long standing demands of the special people of the society, who wanted to feel safe even when in their cars. Dollfuss, the infamous Austrian Chancellor had dissolved all the political parties except the one to which he belonged. This event took place in 1934, on February 1.

In 1961, the United States carried out a successful test of the first ICBM named Minuteman, on this day. Martin Luther King Jr. and nearly 700 demonstrators were arrested in Selma in Alabama on this fateful day, in the year 1965. They were on the streets of Alabama in order to demand more rights and privileges from the United States government. Jim Morrison was arrested in 1969, February 1, while he was performing in a concert. Charges of over-exposure were framed against him.

Russian Politician and former President, Boris Yeltsin was born in February 1, 1931.

Famous Hindi film actor Jackie Shroff was born on this day, in the year 1958. Ajay Jadeja the famous Indian cricketer was also born on this day, in the year 1971.
