'Paranormal Activity' takes over India in Jan

Mumbai/Kolkata, Dec 23 : Paranormal Activity-a horror film that is being reported as the profitable ever made -is all set to take over India in January 8, 2010.

Blumhouse Production's 'Paranormal Activity' stars Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Mark Fredrichs, Amber Armstrong and Ashley Palmer.

The film has been cited as the most profitable ever made, having earned over USD 100 million at the U.S. box office alone, on a claimed production budget of USD 15,000.

The film was directed, written and edited by first time director Oren Peli and produced by Jason Blum and Oren Peli.

The movie centers on a young middle class couple, Katie and Micah, who are haunted by a supernatural presence in their home. After this couple moves into what seems like a typical "starter" two story tract house in suburban San Diego, California.

Katie claims that a ghostly entity has haunted her since her youth and believes that it has followed her to this house too. Micah buys a video camera in the hopes of capturing paranormal activity on film.

During a visit to their house, a self-professed psychic, Dr. Fredrichs assesses that they are being plagued by a demon which feeds off "negative energy" and is intent on haunting Katie no matter where she goes.

Each night, Micah leaves the video camera on a tripod in their bedroom to record whatever might be occurring while he and Katie sleep. He manages to document several phenomena such as objects moving on their own, lights and televisions switching on and off, and sounds ranging from voices and growls to footsteps and loud thuds.

The strange occurrences in the middle of the night soon become frequent with no explanations. They become increasingly disturbed by a presence that may or may not be demonic but is certainly most active in the middle of the night. Especially, when they sleep or try to.

According to media buzz, the movie is presented using "Real Found Footage" from the camera set up by the couple to capture what is haunting them, in a similar manner to The Blair Witch Project and The Last Broadcast and it was photographed at Peli's home during a seven-day sprint in 2006 with a crew of three that included co-producers Toni Taylor, Peli's then-girlfriend, and Amir Zbeda, one of the Oren's best friends.

Oren Peli had been afraid of ghosts his entire life, even fearing the comedy film Ghostbusters, but intended to channel that fear into something positive and productive.

He says, "The reason for making the ghost in the story a demon was a result of the research pointing to the most malevolent and violent entities being 'demons'. If something is lurking in your home there's not much you can do about it. I wanted there to be only a little bit of blood in the movie.

"That's the way I like scary movies; you don't have to go over the top. The fact that we have a lot of scenes in the movie that are totally quiet forces the audience to be quiet and really pay attention to every little thing. Silence only emphasizes that little tap on the wall you know is not supposed to be there."

MEPL and Rupali Aum Entertainment Private Limited have acquired the distribution rights of worldwide acclaimed horror film 'Paranormal Activity', which has been cited by critics as "one of the scariest movies of all time" and recently surpassed 1999's The Blair Witch Project as the most profitable film in cinema history.
