Pak-bound ship being brought to Kolkata

Kolkata, June 26 : Indian police said it would inspect the cargo of a ship bound for Pakistan with heavy explosives and weapons after it was detained at West Bengal's Diamond Harbour under South 24 Parganas district near here on Friday.

West Bengal Director General of Police Bhupinder Singh on Saturday said the vessel would be brought to Kolkata port for a thorough inspection of its cargo and the arms and ammunition it is carrying.

Freight agent of the ship has been asked to send all papers to Kolkata.

The Liberia-registered cargo vessel S G Zyat with military hardware and explosives was held at Diamond Harbour. It is now under observation of the Indian Navy, the Coast Guard and the police.

The ship was on its way to Karachi from Bangladesh's Chittagong port.

The ship was loaded with anti-aircraft guns and rocket launchers, besides ammunition and smoke bombs, reports said.

The ship was detained on intelligence tip off and it is surprising that the Pakistan-bound vessel was passing through Indian waters, West Bengal's Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) S Karpurakayastha told reporters earlier.
