The Taliban attacked a government compound in eastern Afghanistan early today killing at least 12 people, including eight off- duty policemen, who were asleep in their quarters nearby when the assault took place.

According to official sources, two massive truck bombs outside the government compound in the provincial capital of Ghazni were first set off by the assailants, which was followed by a full unrestrained attack by over a dozen gunmen, the Huffington Post reported.

Sources say that the assault forced a gunbattle at the compound involving the policemen and the security forces that led to the killing of all 13 assailants.

Meanwhile, the Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack in a text message sent to the media.
