Joan Rivers has been placed on life support, as her family faces the excruciating decision of whether or not to turn off the support machine, it has been revealed.

The 81-year-old's daughter Melissa Rivers and her family are hopeful that she would take a turn for the better, the Mirror reported.

However, the sources have revealed that the family would have to consider turning off her life support if the situation does not improve.

Sources also added that Rivers would not want to live unless she could enjoy "an active life and would never want to be a burden on anyone."

The American stopped breathing while having surgery on her vocal chords recently and is currently in a medically induced coma, making her completely reliant on the machine to stay alive.
