Tottenham thrash AEL Limassol 3-0 to clinch place in Europa League group stage
Tottenham Hotspur continued with their winning streak under new manager Mauricio Pochettino as they thrashed AEL Limassol 3-0 to clinch their place in the Europa League group stage.
Leading 2-1 from the first leg, a much-changed Tottenham was always in control as Pochettino earned his fourth win since replacing Tim Sherwood.
Tottenham forward Harry Kane missed an early penalty but later calmly stroked in the opener in the 45th minute of the game. Midfielder Paulinho fired low across goal for the second just four minutes after the opener to double the lead and Andros Townsend confidently converted a penalty in the 65th minute as Spurs advanced, The BBC reported.
The victory means that Tottenham has reached the group stage of Europe's secondary club competition for the fourth successive season and will find out their next opponents in Friday's draw.
Former Southampton boss Pochettino introduced a high-pressing style at his former club and appears to being implementing a similar style at White Hart Lane.
His new players, certainly on the evidence shown in the Premier League wins against West Ham and QPR, plus both victories against AEL, have shown that they are capable of playing at the same intensity.
Tottenham has lost just one of their last 12 European games at White Hart Lane, including qualifiers, winning nine and drawing two. They have netted 21 goals in their last six home games, all competitions, at an average of 3.5 per game.
Tottenham manager Pochettino said that he has he has always believed in Kane since the first day, adding that he thinks it is possible to miss penalties, but it is not important. He said that the forward found a way to score, to play and did not let it affect his performance.
Pochettino said that Kane displayed character and personality, adding that the forward has a very strong mind and is a very good player. He also said that he is very pleased with the team and that it was a very good performance.
Pochettino further said that there are no easy games because the Europa League is difficult to play, but his squad played extremely well and they are very happy.
