Kashmir minister faces sexual assault charges
Police registered a case of sexual assault on Friday against Jammu and Kashmir Health Minister Shabir Khan, after a woman doctor working as a block medical officer charged him with molesting her inside the civil secretariat in Srinagar.
The doctor in her complaint to the police alleged that the minister made provocative advances to her - both verbal and physical - and molested her when she met him for official work.
Chief of the Jammu and Kashmir doctors' association, Nisarul Haq, called it a dastardly act and demanded his resignation.
"The minister, namely Shabir Khan, who is holding the portfolio of health. Unfortunately, it is shameful on him that he has gone to this extend of dastardly and beastly act. One lady doctor, who has gone to see him, obviously for an official thing and he has turned to be a beast there and fortunately the doctor has escaped," he said in Srinagar.
A member of Kashmir Assembly, Engineer Rashid, said the minister should be arrested.
"The minister has hurt the sanctity of entire state by committing such a cheap act. According to me he should immediately resign because his place is in prison and not in the secretariat," he said.
Khan is a Congress party legislator and holds the health portfolio in a coalition government headed by regional National Conference (NC) in the state.
She also alleged that the minister forced her to meet him to know about the announcements made by federal minister Ghulam Nabi Azad during visit to a hospital, where she works.
Though, she repeatedly requested him to obtain the information from senior officials.
