Pak PM Sharif, army chief agree to resolve ongoing protests in national interest
Pakistan Prime Minister met Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif at his residence here on Tuesday.
A statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office stated, "There was a consensus on the need to resolve the ongoing issue expeditiously in the best national interest."
This move may pay dividends for Sharif, as it is less than a week since reports stated that the army was preparing to give the present government an ultimatum.
The army, in a statement released last week, had said that it would not interfere with the politics of the country.
However, according to news agencies, government officials have blamed the protests by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) parties on the military, seeing it as an attempt to destabilize the government. Also added to this is the fear that the military may orchestrate a coup.
The PTI and the PTI have been demanding the resignation of Nawaz Sharif through protests in Islamabad. However, if the army rallies behind the incumbent government, then the days of protest may be marked.
