Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has called for new elections to replace the ruling government while clashes between government forces and pro-Russian rebels in the east continue.

Poroshenko said that many members of parliament were supporters of ousted Presidnet Viktor Yanukovych and most of the Ukrainians demand fresh elections.

New elections are scheduled to be held on October 26, said the Ukrainian President.

According to the BBC, more than 2,000 people have died due to violence in Eastern Ukraine between Russian rebel forces and Ukrainian forces.

Proroshenko said in a statement that his decision was in line with the constitution that states that new elections must be held if the ruling coalition is not ready in a period of 30 days.
