Guangzhou Evergrande coach Marcello Lippi has been banned for one match for confronting a referee during the Chinese football club's 0-1 away loss to the Western Sydney Wanderers in the Asian Champions League quarter-finals.

Lippi won't sit on the coaching bench during Guangzhou's home game Wednesday, reports Xinhua.

The Asian Football Confederation, which announced the provisional ban on the Italian Sunday, said its disciplinary committee's final decision "will be issued following the completion of a full investigation."

Nine-man Guangzhou Evergrande went down to Western Sydney Wanderers Aug 20.

Lippi entered the field to confront the referee after defender Zhang Linpeng and Gao Lin were both sent off in the dying minutes.

"I was upset," Lippi later explained. "I know I couldn't go on the field but there were two red cards in the last minutes."
