Tension prevailed at Amta area in Howrah district on Thursday where two women belonging to the same family were allegedly gangraped by eight men on Tuesday, reports said.


The police have arrested seven people in connection to the case. They were reportedly linked to the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).

The incident took a political turn as the victims reportedly belonged to a family of Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) supporters.

A Left Front delegation led by CPI-M leader Biman Basu will visit Uluberia Hospital to meet the victims at around 2 pm on Friday.

TMC MP Mukul Roy told reporters, "People who are involved in such crimes have no colour or caste."

According to reports, the miscreants on Tuesday barged into the house of the victims and gangraped them.
