Inspector General of Police (IG) Meerut Range, Alok Sharma, on Monday said the accused in the rape of a minor girl in the area has been arrested.

He also said the situation though tense is fast becoming normal.

"After the rape incident, there were problems in the morning. People were saying that action has not been taken. But the fact was that the accused was arrested last night only. After that, lots of people came on the roads and there was stone pelting. And now that the force has come in, we have got four companies of PACs ...the deployment is there 100 percent and life is slowly returning to normal," said Sharma.

"It was a flare-up that was I think engineered by some rumors that the girl had died. That has been scotched now. We have said the girl is safe and the accused has been arrested, things are coming back to normal very fast. The investigation is just on, the girl's medical test has been done and the accused arrested. Rest depends on the girl's statement," he added.

Angry protesters today clashed with the police over a nine-year-old minor girl being allegedly raped by a 60-year-old man in Ghaziabad District's Loni area. Following the incident, the security was tightened in the area.
