Nearly 2,520 office-bearers and activists of Pakistan Awami Tehreek and Tehreek-i-Insaf jailed in at least 27 jails of Punjab province are to remain there until further orders from the government.

The members of the two parties were detained before the marches under 3-MPO- an executive order of the government issued by the home department.

According to a prisons department source, the release of political detainees was expected after the conclusion of long marches of both parties in Islamabad, the Dawn reports.

The provincial government would take a call on when to release the detainees as under 3-MPO the detainees could be kept in jails for up to seven, 15 and 30 days depending upon the government's discretionary powers, the report said.

Meanwhile, a district police officer said the activists would remain in the jails till the government issued further orders, which could also extend the detention period, the report added.
