Delhi's Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung Friday announced setting up of four new polytechnics to boost education in the national capital.

"To provide informal training to girls, SC, STs, OBCs and youth residing in villages of Delhi, four new polytechnics will be established, where employment-oriented training shall be imparted," Jung said in his Independence Day address at a function held at the Chhatrasal Stadium here.

He said an "outreach scheme" for students belonging to the weaker sections will be launched soon.

"The government has been doing a lot for the upliftment of the weaker section students. A 'Technical Education Community Outreach Scheme' will be launched in the next couple of months," he said.

Jung said the city has performed well in the area of education for the past couple of years and the youth need to adhere to positive thinking and work towards achieving greater role in life.

"The students in Delhi have achieved great success in the field of education. Over 80 percent students have succeeded in Class 12th examinations.

"Over 21,000 students from weaker sections got admitted in unaided schools. A lot of emphasis has been laid on providing improved sanitation and infrastructure facilities in government schools," he said.

In his speech, Jung also announced that new buildings for Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College under Delhi University will come up by the end of 2014.

Describing the contribution made by Delhiites towards the development of the country as "outstanding", Jung said the "momentum of such contribution needs to be maintained forever".

"Delhi has the highest per capita income in the country. Besides, there has been growth in our economy. The government has made a provision of 67 percent of its budget towards social welfare," Jung said.

Jung also emphasised on the environmental condition of the city and said the Delhi government has set a target of planting 11 lakh trees in the national capital in the coming years.

"In the last couple of years, there has been an increase in the forest cover of Delhi. The government of Delhi has also set a target of planting 11 lakh trees," Jung said.

"A detailed report has been prepared by the Empowered Committee to find solutions to provide clean air and water in Delhi," he added.

"To make Delhi pollution free, 10 solar units will be set up in the coming years," he added.

To make transportation easier for citizens, Jung also announced that 1,380 new non-AC buses will be added to the existing Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) fleet.

Emphasising on women safety, he said: "One-stop centres in every district of the city will be set up to help victims of sexual harassment."

He said the centres will also provide necessary medical aid, legal advice and any other help required by them.
