NHRC notifies government of short-staffed Delhi hospitals
NHRC Friday issued notice to the government over shortage of doctors in Delhi's hospitals and sought an action taken report within four weeks.
Taking suo motu cognizance of a media report which said the central government has admitted that there is an acute shortage of doctors and specialists in its medical units, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued a notice to the union health secretary calling for an action taken report within four weeks.
According to ministry of health and family welfare statistics July 11, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences currently had 223 posts of doctors, 287 posts of nurses and 692 posts of paramedical and technical staff vacant.
Among other hospitals, Safdarjung Hospital has 110 posts of doctors, 143 posts of nurses and 45 posts of para-medical and technical staff vacant; Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital has 87 posts of doctors, 217 posts of nurses and 99 posts of para-medical and technical staff vacant; and Lady Harding Medical College and associated hospitals have 91 posts of doctors along with 406 posts of nurses and 195 posts of para-medical and technical staff currently vacant.
"The commission has observed that it is the duty of the government to provide medical facilities to its citizens for a healthy life and the contents of the media report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights," the NHRC said.
According to the media report, hiring people on contract to tide over a few years does not work towards institution building. The central government has to think for long term, the commission said.
