E-rickshaws to never stop in Delhi, opposition indulging in dirty politics: Satish Upadhyay
Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Satish Upadhyay said here on Friday that the party fully supports the use of E-rickshaws in the national capital and would ensure that this service continues.
"E-rickshaws will not stop functioning in Delhi; the Lieutenant Governor will put forth the best defence and will even go to the Supreme Court if necessary," said Upadhyay after a delegation of Delhi BJP leaders had called on L.G. Najib Jung to discuss the issue.
He also criticized the opposition for indulging in dirty politics over the E-rickshaw issue.
"Some political parties are indulging in cheap politics regarding the e-rickshaw issue. The Congress, AAP and other opposition parties can put forth any allegations because they themselves didn't do anything in their time," Upadhyay added.
He said, "E-rickshaws contribute greatly to Delhi's environment, BJP is with them. But they have to be patient; the rickshaws will start running again with a regularized policy within eight to ten days."
The Supreme Court had yesterday imposed a ban on E-rickshaws till August 14.
On Wednesday, a child was badly burnt in Delhi's Trilokpuri area after his mother was hit by an e-rickshaw and the child fell from her lap into a frying pan of a sweet shop.
E-rickshaws, which were started in 2012, have mushroomed in the city in recent months. They provide the much needed last mile connectivity to residents but have also been in the news because of various mishaps.
They are not covered under the Motor Vehicles Act as they are battery operated and are therefore non-regulated.
