Typhoon Matmo claims 13 lives in China
Typhoon Matmo has killed 13 people in China and affected more than 2.5 million residents in at least eight provinces of the country.
According to China Daily, nine deaths were reported in east China's Jiangxi Province and four were reported in south China's Guangdong Province, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said in a statement on Sunday.
More than 2.54 million people were affected as the impact of the typhoon spread to 185 counties in eight provinces including Liaoning, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Fujian, Jiangxi, Shandong and Guangdong, the report said.
The ministry said that about 289,000 residents have been relocated and some 37,000 are in urgent need of basic living supplies.
Matmo is the 10th typhoon to have hit the country this year.
The catastrophe has reportedly destroyed homes and crops and caused direct economic losses worth 3.37 billion yuan (about 547 million U.S. dollars).
