District Magistrate of Saharanpur, Sandhya Tiwari, today indicated that the situation in the area was returning towards normalcy and claimed that no new instances of violence have occurred since it all started yesterday.

"We are moving towards normal situation now. We are in total control of the situation. No new instances have come up and people are following the curfew," Tiwari told ANI.

When asked about the chances of relaxing the curfew in the area, the District Magistrate said, "After two hours, we will discuss on this issue and then will take the decision."

She also claimed that the administration has handled the situation properly.

On a question related to the number of arrests made and the overall security force in the area, she said, "Almost 24 people have been arrested. We have 2-2 companies of rapid force and also Indo-Tibetan force."

She also indicated that chief minister Akhilesh Yadav was constantly keeping an eye on the ground situation.

"He (chief minister) has sent two senior officials from Lucknow. We are looking after everything and orders have been given that discipline should be maintained at any cost," Tiwari added.

On Saturday morning violent clashes had erupted in Saharanpur amongst two groups who reportedly clashed over a patch of disputed land close to the city's railway station.
