Jammu Kashmir government organises horse auction in Srinagar
For the benefit of pony walas in the city, government of Jammu and Kashmir is organising a horse auction in Srinagar.
This summer, tourist season is at its peak in the Valley and the Amarnath yatra is also going on in full spirit. So tourists and pilgrims who visit Pahalgam, Sonamarg and Gulmarg generally require the pony services.
But to provide good services to tourists and pilgrims, horses should be healthy and for that purpose, department of forest has organized horse auction in Qamerwari forest office on the outskirts of Srinagar.
During the auction, 24 horses were sold by the department and several pony walas came from different areas including Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Yousmarg and Gulmarg where they are providing the services of horses to tourists and pilgrims.
Mukhtar Ahmad, the district forest officer said, "We collect these horses from timber smugglers and organise this type of auction once a year for the benefit of those pony walas who are legally dealing with tourism and yatra related activities."
Such auctions help pony walas because they purchase the horses at reasonable rates and after providing the services to tourists or pilgrims they earn their bread and butter.
So pony owners also demand that authorities should organizes this type of auction not once but two to three times during year.
