Shiv Sena legislator Babanrao Gholap and BJP's Suresh Halwankar have been disqualified and are likely to be barred from contesting the Assembly elections for six years following an opinion given by the Election Commission (EC) of India.

Gholap had been elected to the state legislative assembly from Devlali in Nashik district, while Halwankar represents Ichalkaranji in Kolhapur district.

After Gholap was convicted in a disproportionate assets case and Halwankar in a power theft case, legislature secretary Anant Kalse had referred their cases for disqualification to Governor K Sankaranarayanan as per provisions of Article 192 of the Constitution.
