Gujarat Finance Minister Nitin Patel on Tuesday created a controversy by saying that immigrant labourers from Bihar, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh are responsible for the poverty figures in the state.

"People come to Gujarat from all over the country for employment. Most labourers who work here are from Bihar, UP and Odisha," said Patel.

"Also they enjoy the benefits accorded to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families in Gujarat. But according to the central government data there are no BPL families in Gujarat. All salaries are above this mark," he said.
