Three pilgrims killed in accident in Maharashtra
Three 'Varkari' (pilgrims) were killed and eight others were injured in a accident at Gomewadi village of Atpadi tehsil in this district last night.
According to Atpadi police, a jeep carrying pilgrims was returning from Vakhari village of Pandharpur tehsil in Solapur district, after attending a 'Ringan Sohala' of Shree Dnyneshwar Maharaj and Shree Tukaram Maharaj's 'Palkhi'.
Around midnight yesterday, on the slope at the beginning of the Bhivghat, ahead of Gomewadi village, a container coming from opposite direction of the speeding jeep collided head on with it.
The impact was so horrible that the jeep and container were completely shattered and strewn across the road. The jeep driver was killed on the spot, while two others succubed to their injuries while being shifted to the Sangli Civil Hospital for medical treatment. Remaining eight pilgrims who were injured were admitted to the Sangli Civil Hospital.
On receiving information about the accident, Atpadi police station inspector Sadashiv Shelar and other police constables rushed to the spot and immediately started rescue operation and shifted injured persons to the hospital.
Atpadi police identified the deceased pilgrims as Jaywant alias Gunda Baban Lade (29), Jeep driver, resident of Shekharwadi in Walva Tehsil of this district; Tanaji Balu Mali (40) also from Shekawarwadi and Pandurang Devang, from Arali village in Panhala Tehsil of Kolhapur district.
Police are investigating further into the incident.
